Rules and regulations
Your business has a responsibility to make sure it remains compliant with legislation and regulations relating to your water supply. To help you meet these obligations, we offer a range of services.
Legionella Risk Assessment
Legionnaire’s disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria and can be contracted through breathing in aerosolised water droplets that contain Legionella bacteria. These bacteria thrive in stagnant and warm water at temperatures between 25 and 45°C. A Legionella Risk Assessment aims to help you protect your business and reduce the risks of exposure to Legionella bacteria in the water systems. It also means you know you’re compliant with the HSE’s Approved Code of Practice for the control of Legionella bacteria in water systems (commonly known as the “L8 Guidance”).
What’s involved?We’ll carry out a full risk assessment on all the buildings on your site that are a place of work or can be accessed by the public. It’ll include:
- Taking a full asset register of all water services in the building.
- Taking water temperature measurements to assess the performance of the hot and cold-water system within your building.
- A full schematic diagram of the water system.
- Taking photographs of key water system features.
If there’s a risk of exposure to Legionella in your business, as an employer, landlord or person in control of a site, it’s your responsibility to help protect your business. The health and safety of your employees, contractors and the public is in your hands, so it’s important to assess and mitigate any risks of exposure to Legionella bacteria in your water systems at least every two years.
Your risk assessmentWe’ll provide you with an electronic copy of your Legionella Risk Assessment report. It’ll include expert advice and recommendations based on the findings and it’ll be tailored to your site. You’ll also receive a logbook which will include a hard copy of the report and the documentation you need to record the ongoing risks.
Legionella Training
Make sure your business complies with regulation and ensure everyone at your site understands Legionella and the responsibilities that come with it, with Legionella training.
These 2-3 hour training sessions are available virtually via MS Teams or on site. They’re carried out by our Legionella specialists and will provide a general awareness of Legionella. As part of the on site training, our specialists can also show your in-house maintenance staff how to monitor the temperature and make sure it’s being recorded correctly.
Fire hydrant testing
Fire hydrants located on private property are the responsibility of the owner, occupier or operator of the site to maintain. Underground fire hydrants also need regular inspection and occasional maintenance in accordance with British Standard BS9990. This ensures they’ll work in an emergency and allow the fire brigade to connect their hoses in the vicinity of the fire to access water more easily.
Fire hydrants should be inspected and tested once a year to make sure the water pressure and flow rate are adequate, and the results of each test should be recorded.
We’ve developed a certificate of conformance in line with this British Standard, which we can issue to you on completion of the works to confirm your fire hydrants have been tested to this standard.
RPZ Valve Testing
A Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) valve is a device used to protect water systems from backflow. They’re installed to provide backflow protection against back pressure or back-siphonage and to minimise the risk of backflow from fluid category 4. It’s a legal requirement to have these devices checked regularly, or at least once a year, to make sure they provide the protection required.
All installations, commissioning and testing must be carried out in accordance with the Water Suppliers’ Approved Installation Method AIM-08-01. The commissioning and testing of these valves must only be carried out by an accredited tester approved by the local water supplier, which Wave can offer.
