School's out for summer: things to check before summer break

As the days are getting longer and we’re (finally) seeing some warmer weather, you’ll be preparing for your school site to close for the summer holidays. It might only seem like a short break, but a lot can happen with your water fittings in that time, so checking them now is a great way to be prepared and plan in any work for while the premises are empty.

Try our Leak and Flow Test

If you’ve noticed that your bills are higher recently or you’ve seen an increase in your water usage, you might have a leak. They aren’t always noticeable and can often be hidden along your supply.

You can easily check for a leak without needing our help, with a simple Leak and Flow test. If the test shows that you do have a leak, now is a good time to contact us so we can plan in repairs while the school is closed to students.

Have you got insurance?

You’ll be responsible for any repairs needed to your school’s internal plumbing and underground pipework that moves the water to and from the water mains, so it’s best to check that your insurance policy covers any damages, particularly burst pipes.

Dripping money away

Take a look at your taps, as if they’re dripping, they can waste around 5,500 litres of water a year, as well as costing you money. However, they can usually be fixed without needing a plumber, by replacing the washer or valve.

Look out for a leaky loo

A leaking toilet wastes on average between 215-400 litres of clean water every day, and with 5-8% of all toilets leaking, that’s a lot of water wasted. You might not always see that your loo is leaking, as water will run from the cistern and down the pan. Here’s how to check:

  1. Make sure the back of your toilet pan is dry (at least 15 minutes after the last flush).
  2. Put a dry sheet of toilet paper at the back of the pan.
  3. If you can, leave it for three hours without flushing the toilet.
  4. When you return, if the toilet paper is dry, you don’t have a leak. If it’s wet or broken up, you’ve got a leak.

Urinals are also known culprits for water wastage, as they often continuously flush throughout the day and night unnecessarily. This can be resolved using urinal sensors to set frequency flushing depending on your site. Take a look at how we saved Glasgow City Council £30,000 a year by installing 35 urinal sensors across 11 schools.
