Empowering People, Sustaining Success: The Wave Way

In the last 12 months, the team here at Wave have been proving that strong teamwork coupled with a supportive, inclusive culture, really is a winning combination. We know a positive culture and supportive working environment gives our people a sense of pride where they can thrive and shine – and our growing list of awards echoes our teams’ achievements.

Last year, our amazing team achieved some great success. Including:

  • Brandon Hall Excellence Awards – Best advance in managing a remote hybrid workforce - Learning and Development Awards
  • UK Employee Experience Awards – Health and Wellbeing silver
  • Employee Benefits Awards – Best Healthcare and wellbeing benefits

But awards and accreditations are part of a bigger picture that reflects our award-winning culture. Our people live and breathe our values every day to ensure we: put our customers first, we achieve success together, embrace learning and are accountable for our own actions.

We go above and beyond when it comes to well-being in the workplace. We’re committed to supporting the health, safety and security of our people, building an environment where our people can excel through personal and professional growth. The launch of our new employee benefits portal, rewards and helps our employees with financial, educational and personal support, all backed up with retail perks. We know everyone’s lifestyles are different, so using the online portal employees can select and manage their own rewards and benefits that are right for them.

Empowering our people

As part of our Health, Safety and Wellbeing strategy, we also offer both wellbeing and practical support with a range of speakers sharing their expertise and experience on subjects such as finances, sleep, transgender lives and autism in the workplace.

Sharing experiences

We know the cost-of-living crisis is high on people’s agenda right now, so it was no surprise our voluntary financial educational webinars received an amazing 78% uptake. Our ‘Living Library’ where employees can access human ‘books’ is also very popular. A group of people within Wave share their personal knowledge with other employees, who have personal experiences in a range of subjects, providing advice and guidance and sometimes just a safe place to talk.

We know it can be a bit scary being a parent, so our Parent Coaching helps our new parents prepare for their new life. All our programs are designed to underpin our culture of inclusivity and support, and we continue to create new programs to help our employees in and outside of the workplace to live a better and happier lifestyle.

Building on our commitment to Net Zero

We continue to invest not only in our people, but the planet and our local communities. Our platform, Alaya, continues to enable our employees to set themselves sustainability challenges, while providing volunteering and fundraising opportunities.

These events are recorded and shared around the wider business, and during 2023 over 4000 challenges were completed and created some really positive results:

  • 377 m3 of water saved
  • 1,801 kg of carbon reduced
  • 1,500 goods donated
  • 877 hours volunteered

Hybrid working in our new home

We also relocated to our new home, Salvus House, creating a more collaborative hybrid working space for all our North East employees. As well as hosting our first employee conference, bringing together the whole business to the Baltic Centre in Gateshead, to share key learnings and recent successes.

One Wave employee said: “It was a great day. Lovely to see everyone together and have the opportunity to chat with people I don't often get the chance to. The external speakers were good, and it was great to learn about other parts of the business too."

Watch this space, there’s much more to come

Building on last year's success, we want to keep the momentum going and make the future even more exciting. We’ll continue to host informative and motivational speakers on topics that our people have requested, such as testicular cancer, managing finances and so much more.

We'll build and embed our social and sustainability promise, with more community challenges, awareness initiatives, volunteering days and opportunities, to allow our employees to give back to their community. And our team will be out and about speaking at industry conferences sharing our expertise.

So, with lots of reasons to celebrate our collective achievements, we’ve no intention of resting on our laurels. We’re now looking forward and excited for the rest of the year ahead.
